What is a Periodontist?

Dr Allyson SuppowitzA periodontist is a surgical specialist who focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, which require three additional years of education beyond dental school. They are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, and are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures, such as periodontal plastic surgery and esthetic crown lengthening.

Periodontists offer a wide range of treatments, such as scaling and root planing, periodontal surgery, extractions, implant placement, cosmetic gum procedures, bone grafting, sinus augmentation, and surgery to the jaw bones. Periodontists are specially trained in the placement, maintenance, and repair of dental implants.
