What to Expect at Your Oral Hygiene Visit

Your hygiene appointment will last forty-five to sixty minutes. It will usually include the following:

  • A review of your Medical and Dental History including previous oral conditions.
  • Periodontal Health Evaluation including checking gums and bone around teeth for any signs of periodontal disease. (Probing depths, recession, plaque control, etc.)
  • Digital X-Ray Examination at regular intervals: essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions.
  • Oral Cancer Screening
    • Conventional Oral Exam
    • Light Based Oral Cancer Detection System
  • Examination for Tooth Decay (caries).
  • Examination of Existing Restorations: Check current fillings, crowns, etc.
  • Removal of Plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease.
  • Removal of Calculus (Tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
  • Careful Polishing of both natural and restored teeth. (See Exceptional Hygiene Knowledge and Care section.)
  • Fluoride Treatment and Varnishes as indicated for root sensitivity and to decrease susceptibility to cavities.
  • Dental Health Education to facilitate the understanding of your dental conditions and the home therapies indicated to ensure a healthy smile. You will be instructed in the proper methods of tooth brushing, flossing and adjunctive dental health aids as needed.
