Tooth-Colored Restorations

We are a mercury-free practice. However, many people still have silver/mercury fillings in their mouths from years past. These fillings are not particularly pleasing to the eye and many patients are concerned about the mercury content of these silver fillings.

Disadvantages of Silver Fillings

Silver fillings have many drawbacks. With age, the metal of a silver filling expands, contracts and can split. The edges of the filling can wear down, become weak or break, exposing the tooth to decay.

Silver fillings contain 50% mercury. They can corrode, leak and cause stains on your teeth.

Fortunately, silver fillings can often be replaced with strong tooth-colored bonded fillings (composite resin).

How are Tooth-Colored Restorations applied?

During the office visit, Dr. Supowitz removes the old filling, or the damaged or decaying part of the tooth. The tooth is then prepared to receive the filling. Dr. Supowitz then carefully selects the appropriate colored filling material and shapes it to the contours of your natural tooth.

Benefits of Tooth-Colored Restorations vs. Silver Fillings

  • Metal free
  • Restores natural esthetics to teeth
  • Durable
  • More conservative tooth preparation
